This annual week long event takes place every August for over 50 years. It is held at the Summer Amfitheatre, situated within the scenic Fortress of Niš. The concept of the festival is to celebrate and reward the work of actors – not directors, screenplay authors, cinematographers, costume, set and effects makers of former Yugoslavia.

Nowadays, the festival is a showcase for the actors belonging not only to the domestic cinematography – it includes all co-productions in which Serbia is involved. This gives the festival an international dimension. The most distinguished participant of the FILM FESTIVAL was the legendary Welsh actor sir Richard Burton, accompanied by his wife American actress Elizabeth Taylor. Burton had played the role of Marshall Tito in 1973 Yugoslavian epic „Battle of Sutjeska“.
